TOP 3 REASONS WHY YOUR NEW YEAR'S RESOLUTIONS FAIL

Updated: Oct 23, 2023

Think back to last January - what were your big goals for the year? Or does that question slightly make you want to punch something? *ducks for cover*

I've been thinking about why we make New Year's resolutions - and why they often fail by week 3 of January. What are the reasons that resolutions fail?

The new year does bring fresh energy to us - it feels like a clean slate. And that sensation of renewal and new beginnings can be really helpful in achieving our goals.

So why do they fall apart so quickly?

So I've come up with a handy-dandy list. Here, in no particular order, are the top 3 reasons your resolutions fail - and how to use the energy of the new year to get what you really want.

1. You've made too many.

The holidays are often a time of massive over-indulgence - usually a lot of sitting, eating and drinking. It feels great at the time - but can lead to a big old full-body hangover.

That makes you want to overhaul EVERYTHING - have a huge cleanse, make some big changes.

You're going to quit drinking and smoking, eat healthily, take up yoga and running and meditation, fix your sleep, get off your phone, see more of your friends, read more books and really get organised.

Only then can you finally launch your business/write your bloody book/create your masterpiece/meet your ideal partner, etc.

Oh my god, it sounds f**king exhausting, frankly!

No wonder you fail - you're trying to eat an elephant in one bite!

I promise you that every goal you can conceive for yourself is 100% achievable - but not all at once and not all in one go.

The quickest way to get what you want is to laser-focus all your positive energy on it. If you want 100 things at once, your energy will be scattered.

Get what you want by prioritising your goals and breaking them up into small, achievable chunks.

What do you really want?

2. They're not important to you.

Be honest - if you wrote down all the things you say you want for yourself in the new year, how many of them come from you? I mean deep down to the core of you - like this is what you deeply desire.

And how many of them are 'shoulds'?

Resolutions that start with 'I should', 'I ought to' or 'I need to' - these are the most likely to fail.

Ask yourself WHY do you want these things? Who told you that you should? Whose voice are you hearing - is it yours or someone else's?

Do you really want those things? If the answer is anything other than a full-bodied YES, then forget it for now. It's not important to you - and that's ok!

Let yourself off the hook for the things you secretly don't give enough of a fuck about!

Let go of others' expectations and start to allow yourself to dream about what you really want.

3. You've got a big BUT (stay with me).

Too many dreams and deep desires die before they're even acted upon - why?

Because you don't believe that they're possible.

When you allow yourself to think about what you really want, even for a moment, your mind serves you up a massive BUT.

But I can't, but it's too expensive, but I don't have the time, but I'll never be able to do it, but I'm not qualified enough, but I'm not thin enough, but I'm not dedicated enough, but it's too hard for me, but no-one will buy my stuff, but I'm not a proper writer/healer/artist.

It all comes down to a whole lot of not-enoughness - which is bullshit.

You are already more than enough to have the life you desire.

You are worthy enough, young enough, old enough, nice enough, talented enough, thin enough, brave enough, clever enough.

You are enough - AND you get to call in support.

YES! You can be enough and have help TOO!

Do you think Oprah achieves everything she achieves all by herself? Of course not! Trust me - she has ALL the help and support.

She has laser-focused on what she wants her life to look like, and then, she's called in all the support she needs to achieve that goal. You get to do that too!

So - to sum up:

  • ask yourself what you really want

  • focus all your positive energy on it

  • get all the support you need to help you believe it and then achieve it!

That's it! Doesn't that feel better?

I'd love to know - what do you really want? And of course - how can I help you achieve it? Let me know!
