LEARNING FROM JOY AND PAIN

Two young women hugging tightly

We generally learn life's lessons in two ways: the easy way and the hard way. Joy and pain.

And it's true that most of the time we get to choose - but not always.

So yes, it would be fabulous if all life's lessons were learned through joy. But realistically, at some point we're going to break legs, crash cars, go broke, get ill, have our hearts broken, and all the rest that life can throw at you - because that's life.

The trick is understanding that both ways to learn are good - it's all good - it's all learning.

When your heart is bursting and you are vibing high, make sure you milk it for all it's worth. Ask yourself 'How can I have more of this? How can I bring this experience into my daily reality? What is the most important thing I could learn from this?'

But then - when the shit hits the fan, don't tear out your hair, railing against the fact that your previous state of joy has gone. Of course it's gone - everything is temporary. Life is life. It will return.

The trick that most of us miss (me included!) is this: ask yourself the same question in sorrow as in joy. 'What am I going to learn from this?'

Feel your feelings - that's important - but begin asking yourself right away. Try to understand your role in what you're experiencing. Be self-loving, but be honest with yourself.

For example - I know that when I rush to occupy the 'victim' position, by making someone else 'wrong', there is GOLD to be mined there, if I can be brave enough to look.

Taking personal responsibility for your life's experiences—ALL of them—can reveal richness and great rewards. It is courageous work, and you might need some support to do it.

What do you think? Does this resonate? Are you learning from joy or pain right now? Can you give yourself loving compassion for BOTH of those experiences?

After all - life is pretty fucking beautiful when you think about it.

Love you,

P.S. One of the best ways I know of supporting myself through joy and pain is by practising Reiki. If you're interested in learning how to heal yourself and others, check out THIS REIKI COURSE
